Getting ready

The morning started slow and easy — laughter, sunshine coming through an old wooden fence line, Victoria putting the finishing touches to her makeup outside rather than being stuck indoors. No stress, no rushing. That’s usually my favourite sign of how the rest of the day is going to go, and it set the tone perfectly for what came next.

The ceremony

Victoria and Josh married at their local village church, all red carpet, lychgate, and warm July light through the door. What stuck with me most wasn’t the vows themselves, but everything around them — a flower girl grinning up at Josh mid-aisle, kids in the pews, grandparents dabbing their eyes.

It’s the kind of ceremony that’s easy to photograph because nobody’s performing for the camera. They’re just there, together, for two people they love.

Then came the confetti — always one of my favourite moments of any wedding day. Josh and Victoria came bursting out through the church porch into a tunnel of raised hands and thrown petals, guests of every age crowded in either side, a couple of them cheering from wheelchairs and on crutches. Genuinely one of the warmest confetti shots I’ve taken this year — you could feel how loved this couple are.

Golden hour at The Mill

We slipped away for ten quiet minutes as the light started to turn gold, down by the willows and the old cobbled paths that make The Mill at Elstead such a gorgeous backdrop for portraits. No forced poses, no long list of shots to tick off — just Victoria and Josh, arms around each other, having a laugh about the day so far while the last of the sun came through the trees behind them. This is the kind of light every wedding photographer in Surrey chases, and Elstead in July didn’t disappoint.

The reception

Inside, The Mill’s beamed ceiling, fairy lights, and big open windows gave the room a properly warm, lived-in feel for speeches and the first dance — nothing stiff or corporate about it. The riverside setting and honest, unpolished character of the building are exactly why this venue photographs so beautifully; it doesn’t need much dressing up to feel special.

Speeches were held outside against the Mill’s red-brick walls, sun-soaked and a little chaotic in the best way — guests leaning in, laughing, phones up filming the good bits.

But if you’ve read anything else on this site, you’ll know the party is always my favourite part of a wedding, and this one delivered. The first dance had that lovely mix of nerves and giggling that I love catching, and later in the evening I got one of my favourite frames of the whole day: Victoria and Josh with their heads together over a family member’s baby on the dance floor, fairy lights glowing behind them. That’s the relaxed, family-first feeling this whole wedding had from start to finish — not a “show,” just people who love each other, together in one room.
